Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards (iSUP)

 

iSUPs are portable, and you can even take them with you while you hike or walk a trail. These types of boards are best for light use, like recreation or sightseeing. They can’t withstand the rough routes of white water paddleboarding. Also, these are not ideal for surfing. 

iSUPs are more durable than hard paddleboards. Apart from that, they are on the cheaper side than their counterparts, rigid paddleboards. If you are a beginner, then iSUP is the best option for you. 

Hard Paddle Boards

Hard Paddle Boards aren’t very portable, and it becomes hard to carry them with you through the longer routes. They are the best alternative when you plan to race on your surfboards. Hence they are ideal for surfing. 

These types of boards are less durable as they easily get dented and scratched. You’ll have to pay a much more premium price to purchase a hardboard.  If you are a pro user, then you should go for a Hard Paddle Board. 

Choosing The Right Paddle Size

Your experience while paddleboarding for the first time depends on the size of your paddle. You don’t need to purchase a paddle with a fixed size, as there are paddles available that have an adjustable height. But you still need to find the right size for you. Different type of paddleboarding needs different types of paddle heights:

  • Flat Water Paddle Boarding

You need to choose a paddle that’s about ten inches longer than your height for flat waters. 

  • Stand Up Surfing

If you plan to do paddleboard surfing while standing up, your paddle should be at least eight inches longer than you are. 

  • Paddle Board Racing

If you want to participate in paddleboard racing, you should choose a paddleboard that is about a footlong from your height. This will give you maximum power and speed during speed. 

  • Bungee Straps 

While most paddle boards come with a bungee strap, you should also add extra safety with another pair of bungee straps. 

  • Attachment Points & Screw Holes

Whether you want to film your surfing routine or attach a fishing rod for clear water surfing, you need to get attachment points fixed on your paddleboards.

  • Life Jacket 

Whether you know to swim or not, a life jacket is very much necessary when you decide to paddleboard. 

  • Car Rack or Roof Rack

If you have a hard paddleboard and are traveling somewhere, you need to carry it everywhere. Carrying a paddleboard without a roof rack isn’t easy. So, get a roof rack installed to take the paddleboard with you. 

  • Backpack 

If you have an inflatable board, you need not install a roof rack on your car. Instead, carry that on the shoulders. Just purchase a backpack to carry it. 

  • Pump 

Naturally, you’ll need an air pump to inflate your inflatable stand up paddleboard. Choose the right quality air pump so that it doesn’t get defective again and again. 

Mistakes To Avoid While Paddle Boarding:

 

  • Hold your paddle at a distance from your body. When you hold it too close to your body, it hinders your speed. 
  • Keep your feet at a width that is the same as your shoulders.
  • Don’t stand up in a surf stance while you are paddleboarding. This way, you might lose your balance and fall into the water. 
  • Remember to take long strokes while paddling. 
  • Don’t just partially dip the paddle in the water. 
  • Your back muscles are primary in paddleboarding, not the muscles in your arms. 
  • Before you go to a new paddling spot, you need to do your homework about the location. Know about the water current of the place and how the weather stays throughout time.
