With SnapShot 136, telecoms pricing examines the changes taking place in the India mobile market since the previous SnapShot 106 (May 2018) analysing the Indian market – published in March 2018. India is the world’s second-largest telecommunications market, with a total subscriber base of 1,183.51 million at the end of March 2019.

Since 2018, the Indian mobile market has consolidated into three main groups, the Jio Reliance group, the Bharti Airtel group and the Vodafone Idea group. Jio Reliance has become the market leader with four companies including, Aircel, Reliance Communications, Tata and Telenor withdrawing from the market during 2018. Vodafone Idea has continued to lose subscribers since its merger but Bharti Airtel has maintained its overall market share.

Pricing has stabilised but remains at low levels with high bundles of mobile data offered. Use of mobile data is increasing with Jio reporting average usage of 11.2 GB per month, Airtel 4.7 GB per month and Vodafone Idea 2.9 GB per month as of the end of June 2019.
