Beauty brand Clarins unveils Le Domaine Clarins, a private farm and open lab in the Alps, to sustainably source, grow and observe plant ingredients.

Le Domaine Clarins is a private farm and open lab in the Alps to sustainably source, grow and observe plants.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Deeply believing that biodiversity is life, Clarins acquired 200,000 acres in the Alps to grow and study plants for the development of skincare and makeup formulas. At 4,500 ft altitude, the unique microclimate, shielded by mountains, provides optimal growing conditions for vegetation. Clarins owes its success to the plants that produce the company’s precious effective ingredients and products. “Above all, it’s the quality of the raw materials that make quality products,” says Christian Courtin-Clarins, President of the Supervisory Board, Groupe Clarins.

This long-term project, directly inspired by permaculture, brings together all the advantages of a virtuous and quality production: plants which grow as the seasons unfold, in a pollution-free soil, at a higher altitude and, according to organic farming criteria. No mechanical material is used so as not to traumatize the ground. From these ideal conditions, plants are prepared to make the best skin care products, naturally. “As a scientist, I am very vigilant about the quality of natural ingredients and the way these ingredients are extracted. Le Domaine Clarins gives us a chance to obtain the best ingredients while preserving the environment” says Dr. Olivier Courtin-Clarins, Managing Director of Groupe Clarins.

Directly connected to the Clarins laboratory outside of Paris, Le Domaine Clarins is a vast study field and an immense source of quality raw materials. A part of Le Domaine Clarins, The Collection Garden, is dedicated to new plant experimentation in this harsh but pure mountain environment.  Here, expert phyto-chemists from Clarins Laboratories and Jean-Pierre Nicolas, the Group’s ethno-botanist, experiment and analyze plant specimens to extract their quintessence in order to find new beauty properties to enrich Clarins products. Each plant is carefully referenced, and information collected.  This information is added to the Clarins Herbarium, which already contains 250 plants. As of now, formulas which will benefit from plant-based ingredients grown in Le Domaine Clarins include: organic Alpenrose extract found in some My Clarins products, organic Houseleek extract found in ClarinsMen products, the organic Horehound extract found in Clarins Anti-pollution complex, and Clarins cleansers.

As pioneers of responsible development, the brand values are rooted in an abiding respect for nature. The founder, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, launched the brand’s first product line with 100% pure plant extract oils in 1954. Shortly after, Jacques had the intuition that the pure Alpine environment would provide naturally effective ingredients to preserve the skin. In 1967, Jacques launched Clarins Cleansing Milks, with Alpine Herbs, which remain key ingredients in the current formulas.

Today, Le Domaine Clarins in the Alps is an important symbol of going further for the beauty of tomorrow. The long term ambition for Clarins is an owned 100% field to jar production.

Avon Cosmetics becomes a founding patron of the prestigious new British Beauty Council to grow the impact and potential of the British beauty industry

Avon Products, Inc. (NYSE: AVP), a globally recognised leader in direct selling of beauty products, has joined the new British Beauty Council, established to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the beauty industry.

As a key player in this exciting new venture, Avon will use its 130-year heritage in breakthrough innovation and insight from its millions-strong global network of women to help open up growth and excellence in the beauty sector.  As part of its ‘Open Up’ strategy, Avon is embracing new partnerships to transform its brand, reach new consumers and create more opportunities for beauty entrepreneurs to earn, learn and succeed on their own terms.

The British Beauty Council has been set up to recognise and promote the huge contribution that beauty makes to the UK economy and to build beauty as a career choice, as well as extending into developing excellence in areas such as formulation, manufacturing, supply, and packaging. There are strong synergies with Avon’s mission to enable its millions of Representatives worldwide to become successful beauty entrepreneurs – whether on a full or part-time basis.

Avon was also attracted to the partnership by the British Beauty Council’s pledge to support inclusivity – to celebrate diversity and the interests of the entire industry, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, religion or culture. This aligns perfectly with Avon’s own longstanding commitment to democratise beauty, by delivering high-quality beauty products at accessible prices and through championing every kind of beauty.

Louise Scott, Chief Scientific Officer at Avon, is the business’s representative on the British Beauty Council board. She said: “It is estimated that the British beauty industry is worth more than £20 billion. We believe whole-heartedly in the British Beauty Council’s mission to ensure that beauty is to be recognised and supported as a world leading industry.”

Millie Kendal MBE, CEO of the British Beauty Council added: “I am delighted to have an iconic brand like Avon support the British Beauty Council as a founding patron. The promotion of female entrepreneurs via the cosmetics industry is an important and relevant – not to mention valuable – asset. Avon has long been a leader in supporting women in business and has a huge amount to bring to the table as it moves forward through significant transformation – exactly the kind of partner we need to elevate the reputation of the beauty industry.”

The cosmetics company will celebrate its fourth anniversary by making its largest-ever donation of the brand’s vegan, cruelty free makeup to women in need across the country

Thrive Causemetics, a Los Angeles-based vegan makeup company, announced a $25 million product donation—the largest in the company’s history—to celebrate its four-year anniversary.

CEO Karissa Bodnar founded Thrive in her Seattle apartment in 2015. Giving has been at the heart of Thrive’s work from day one—when Karissa sold her first set of lashes, she immediately donated a pair. Since then, through its “Beauty with a Purpose” program, the company ensures that a donation is made for every product sold.

“Everyone who purchases a product becomes part of our mission to give back—and after four years of building a compassionate community, we’ve created a movement to empower women through beauty,” Bodnar said. “We are proud to partner with incredible organizations across the country to bring the power of beauty to every woman, no matter what challenges they face.”

This gift will benefit over 50 non-profit organizations that empower women who are fighting cancer, surviving domestic abuse or emerging from homelessness. The beauty brand is also asking members of the #ThriveTribe—Thrive’s enthusiastic customers and supporters—to nominate future recipients.

One of the recipient organizations, Mary’s Place, is from Bodnar’s home state of Washington. The organization offers women and families a safe place and a path out of homelessness.

“We are very excited about our partnership with Thrive Causemetics,” Mary’s Place Executive Director Marty Hartman said. “Women experiencing homelessness often feel invisible and worthless. We’re grateful to Thrive for bringing hope and for helping our women regain their self-confidence and thrive!”

Thrive’s fourth anniversary giving campaign comes on the heels of a major donation to support those affected by the California wildfires last fall. Thrive Causemetics practices responsive giving—with partners receiving what they need to best accomplish their goals—whether it’s high-performance products or much-needed funds.

About Thrive Causemetics: Thrive Causemetics is an independent, female-owned beauty brand that creates high-performance vegan cosmetics and supports a community of giving. All of Thrive Causemetics’ products are free of parabens and sulfates, in addition to being 100 percent cruelty free. Through its Beauty with a Purpose program, every product purchase results in a donation to help a woman thrive.
