“We were extremely gratified to recognize this incredible group of writers, who have used their powers to write stories that unite us, rather than divide us,” said HUMANITAS President Ali LeRoi. “And these winners are also using their prize money for good, by supporting amazing organizations devoted to empowering the next generation of writers.”
“Now, more than ever, HUMANITAS is dedicated to shining a light on stories that reflect who we are as complex, fallible human beings, where we’ve been and where we’re going,” said Executive Director Cathleen Young. “The America we all grew up with is now increasingly fractured with new narratives taking root that foment hatred and bigotry and a level of divisiveness that threatens the very future of our democracy by breaking down all the core values that used to unite us. We must do everything we can to nurture and empower the next generation of journalists, film and television writers and playwrights.”
About The HUMANITAS Prize

Will Bagley to Receive Western Writers of America’s Owen Wister Award
Will Bagley, a journalist known for monumental nonfiction books about the Mormon West and overland trails, will receive the 2019 Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Contributions to Western Literature from Western Writers of America (WesternWriters.org).
Bagley will also be inducted into the Western Writers Hall of Fame, housed outside the McCracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo.
“People either love or hate me,” said Bagley, who lives in Salt Lake City. “The Wister Award is an expression of affection from my WWA friends that is appreciated and humbling, for it calls to mind the words ‘I am not worthy!'”
The nonprofit guild’s highest honor will be presented during Western Writers of America’s convention June 19-22 in Tucson, Ariz.
Bagley is a three-time winner of WWA’s Spur Award for “Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Youngand the Massacre at Mountain Meadows”; “The Mormon Rebellion: America’s First Civil War, 1857-1858”; and “With Golden Visions Bright Before Them Trails to the Mining West, 1849–1852,” all published by the University of Oklahoma Press.
Bagley has also received the Western Heritage Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Caroline Bancroft History Prize. His books have also been honored by Westerners International, Utah Division of State History, Wyoming State Historical Society and the John Whitmer Historical Association.
“Will is not just a tenacious researcher, he is a brilliant writer,” WWA executive director Candy Moulton said. “His ‘Blood of the Prophets’ is a classic – impeccably researched and written with precision.”
Bagley’s other books include “South Pass: Gateway to a Continent” and “So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812–1848,” both Spur Award finalists.
Since the early 1950s, Western Writers of America has honored and promoted all forms of literature about the American West. Previous Owen Wister honorees include Pulitzer Prize winner N. Scott Momaday; historians David Dary and Robert M. Utley; and best-selling novelists Rudolfo Anaya, Elmore Leonard, Tony Hillerman and Lucia St. Clair Robson.

Dr. John P. Lederach to Get 36th Niwano Peace Prize
The Niwano Peace Foundation will award the 36th Niwano Peace Prize to Dr. John Paul Lederach, Professor Emeritus of International Peacebuilding at the Kroc Institute for Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a Distinguished Scholar at Eastern Mennonite University in the United States.
An award presentation ceremony will take place in Tokyo on May 8 at 10:30 a.m. In addition to an award certificate, Dr. Lederach will receive a medal and a cash prize of 20 million yen.
In many war-torn settings like Colombia, Nepal, Northern Ireland and Somalia, Dr. Lederach has provided accompaniment for local communities most affected by decades of violence. As a practitioner-scholar, his academic work draws on this rich experience in the field as a mediator, negotiator, peacebuilding practitioner, trainer and consultant.
In selecting Dr. Lederach as a recipient for 2019, the Niwano Peace Prize Committee said he “has helped support and encourage evolving peace processes, give voice to those on the margins of society and empower ordinary citizens to transform ongoing and emerging conflict in a healthy and positive way.”
Moreover, his “contribution on conflict transformation through his teaching, training, practicing and his own organizational network has given tremendous inspiration and courage to peace activists and practitioners around the world,” it said.
Niwano Peace Prize:
The Niwano Peace Foundation established the Niwano Peace Prize to honor and encourage individuals and organizations that have contributed significantly to inter-religious cooperation, thereby furthering the cause of world peace, and to make their achievements known as widely as possible. The foundation hopes in this way both to enhance inter-religious understanding and cooperation and to encourage the emergence of still more persons devoted to working for world peace. The prize is named in honor of the founder and first president of the lay Buddhist organization Rissho Kosei-kai, Nikkyo Niwano.
Niwano Peace Foundation:
The Niwano Peace Foundation was chartered in 1978 to contribute to the realization of world peace and the enhancement of a culture of peace. The foundation promotes research and other activities based on a religious spirit and serves the cause of peace in such fields as education, science, religion and philosophy.
