Over 75,000 students are participating in Read with Malcolm READBowl 2019 across 3,000 class rooms over the entire USA. The youth literacy initiative was launched by NFL Super Bowl Champion and author Malcolm Mitchell and his nonprofit organisation Share the Magic Foundation. “We are thrilled to launch READBowl to support teachers across the country in engaging their students in a national reading competition,” said Mitchell. “READBowl was created to help young and striving readers discover and enhance their passion for reading. To all the students competing, I am watching you and reading along with you.”

READBowl—a free national reading competition for Pre-K to 8th grade classrooms and established after-school programmes—began today, the same day as the College Football National Championship game, and will run through Friday, February 1. Weekly prizes are provided by First Book and Share the Magic Foundation. Mitchell will announce the READBowl grand prize winners on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3. Registration is free and remains open through Friday, January 11. Teachers may register their classes at:

READBowl offers a big-game atmosphere and a personal connection to Malcolm Mitchell, with a goal to inspire students through a friendly classroom-based reading competition. While Mitchell struggled to read as a child, athletics provided him a path to higher education. He became one of the top wide receivers in the University of Georgia’s history. In 2016, he was drafted by the New England Patriots; and during his rookie year, he played a crucial role in the Patriot’s historic overtime comeback win in Super Bowl 51. In addition to success on the field, Mitchell is the author of “The Magician’s Hat” and is now working on his second children’s book with Scholastic Publishing.

To celebrate the school choice, diversity, and culture in the Brooklyn community, education leaders are going to join together. The event will include speakers and presenters, as well as workshops for the children, including African drumming and an International Children’s Film Festival. The event will feature more than 40,000 school choice events across all 50 states.

“School is more than a place where you go to learn academics. Our school is a community that honors the special talents of each individual – one where we learn to work together to form a global perspective surrounded by values of social justice, service, and faith. Because our families are able to choose to participate in a values-based education here at the academy, we are able to nurture the growth of active, global citizens who are prepared to enter college, career, and beyond with intellectual vigor and a strong moral compass,” said Manuela Adsuar-Pizzi, principal of St. Francis Xavier – Queen of All Saints Catholic Academy.

The Government of Canada announces investment under SUAP

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Cannabis Act came into force in October 2018, marking a significant milestone in the Government of Canada’s commitment to legalising and strictly regulating the cannabis. Public education about cannabis is fundamental to achieve the Government’s objective of protecting public health and safety.

The Government of Canada announced an investment of more than $1.8 million over three years under Health Canada’s Substance Use and Addictions Program (SUAP). This funding will support the Government of the Northwest Territories in developing and delivering a comprehensive and interactive cannabis public education campaign. Through the use of traditional media and social media platforms, augmented reality, community-led engagement sessions and other innovative public education tools, the campaign will bring health and safety information to communities across the territory.

By working collaboratively with provincial and territorial governments and a range of partners, the Government of Canada is able to maximise the reach of its public education efforts and to ensure that Canadians have access to the information needed to make informed choices about cannabis use.

Ginette Petitpas Taylor, the Honourable Minister of Health said, “The Government of Canada is expanding its cannabis public education efforts by investing in community-based projects. This campaign will provide Northerners with factual information to help them make informed decisions about cannabis use.”
“I am pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting the Government of the Northwest Territories in its cannabis public education efforts. Collaborative partnerships such as this one are helping to provide Canadians with clear, consistent and evidence-based information on the health and safety facts about cannabis”, says Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament.

Glen Abernethy, Minister of Health and Social Services for the Northwest Territories said, “This federal investment will support activities in communities throughout Northwest Territories that will help residents, particularly young people, have access to culturally safe information that will help them make healthy and responsible choices on cannabis use.”

In Budget 2018, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $62.5 million over five years to support community-based organisations as well as Indigenous organisations and governments that are educating their communities on the risks associated with cannabis use.

Health Canada’s Substance Use and Addictions Program provides funding for evidence-informed and innovative awareness, prevention, harm reduction and treatment initiatives addressing a range of substances, including cannabis. The Government of the Northwest Territories will use this funding to lead community engagement activities, launch a media campaign using both social media and traditional media, and develop public education and awareness materials for different segments of the population.

Tampa area’s National School Choice Week festival will be going to celebrate next week. It features a student jazz band, an avionics demonstration, a speaker from the Florida Department of Education, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks player Jerry Wunsch. The festival combines family-friendly entertainment with informative booths from a wide range of education stakeholders. Celebrate Youth is coordinating the event.

The festival runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at Pasco Safety Town and about 2,000 people are expected to attend.

This event is planned to coincide with the history-making celebration of National School Choice Week 2019, which will feature more than 40,000 school choice events across all 50 states. From January 20 through 26, 2019, more than 40,000 independently-planned events will be held in celebration of the Week.

“Many families in our county live in poverty and parents are unaware of what resources are available for their children’s education. For families who do not have access or confidence in reaching out for those resources, we provide a face-to-face, hands-on approach to get them the information they need and deserve,” said Kelly Steen, member of the Celebrate Youth planning committee. “The festival helps them decide which school choice is best for their children.”

“School choice gives parents the ability to choose a school that is the best fit for their child’s needs. It gives parents the power to decide how to educate their children,” said Tricia Staltare, member of the Celebrate Youth planning committee. “With the many scholarships available, parents have the ability to choose the school that works best for their child.”
