Media Advisory: CUPE National President to Join Striking School Support Workers in Halifax

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–CUPE National President Mark Hancock will be visiting school support workers on picket lines across HRM starting at 9 AM on Thursday, June 8th to bring greetings of support and solidarity on behalf of CUPE’s National Executive Board and the 700,000+ workers represented by the union across Canada. Their visit will begin at 1710 Sackville Drive in Middle Sackville.

The 1800+ school support workers represented by CUPE Local 5047 have been on strike for more than a month, during which time government has refused to authorize the funds needed for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education to settle the contract with support staff. The majority of CUPE 5047 members take home less than $1500 a month.

Hancock will be joined by CUPE General Vice President Sherry Hillier, CUPE NS President Nan McFadgen and CUPE PEI President Ashley Clark, along with CUPE 5047 President Chris Melanson and rank and file members.
