BURNABY, British Columbia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–On behalf of four United Steelworkers (USW) local unions, representing over 4,000 Teck employees in British Columbia, USW District 3 Director Scott Lunny expressed support for Teck’s planned split into Teck Metals and Elk Valley Resources, which is being voted on by shareholders on April 26, 2023.

Teck Resources is Canada’s largest mining and smelting company, based in Vancouver, B.C. USW represents workers at the Highland Valley Copper mine in Logan Lake, Elkview Operations in Sparwood, Fording River mine in Elkford and at Teck’s smelter operations in Trail. In addition to being a world-class, low-carbon metals and steel-making coal producer, Teck is a homegrown Canadian company that employs thousands of British Columbians and supports the economies of numerous B.C. communities.

United Steelworkers have a long history of representing workers in these communities,” said Lunny. “Certainly, the 4,000-plus USW members working for Teck, and their families, have a major interest in the company’s future. We have a history of strong bargaining for our members and working together to support our province.”

Management has briefed the union on their plans and our union believes the plan to split into two, B.C.-based companies is in the best interest of our members at the metals operations and at the coal mines,” added Lunny. “This is a well-thought-out plan that will create two strong companies willing to work with us and British Columbians to become ESG leaders, provide stability and certainty for our members, provide ongoing benefits to Indigenous nations, and invest in B.C.”
