Toyota GR Supra: 15 Things to Dislike About the Sports Car

If you recall from the last update, Thomas Rosquin, manager of search and business intelligence for MotorTrend, drove our 2020 Toyota Supra on a 500-mile road trip. Upon return, he sent me a list of 10 things he loves and this list of 15 things he does not. I’m inclined to agree.

15 Things We Don’t Like About the Fifth-Generation “A90” Supra:

  • Not a 2021. The 2021 Supra gets a bump in horsepower, and the rear end jitters were [somewhat] ironed out.
  • Steering wheel. It does not control the gauges, and it’s ugly—it looks like it was taken from the Toyota parts bin. It has a chrome accent while the rest of the car is brushed aluminum and “carbon fiber.”
  • Horn. Stuck behind a truck parade on the freeway, I thought it be the perfect time to give the horn a good workout. Unfortunately, the sound that came out was akin to a little toot.
  • Gauges. The whole right side of the gauge cluster is empty. Would be great to get some information in that area: TPMS display? The Nissan Sentra in our long-term fleet is more configurable than the Supra.
  • Display brightness (lack thereof). As previously mentioned, the screen in the center console is way too dark, and the adjustment wheel is apparently non-op. I found the same to be true of the 2021 Supra we just tested.
  • Yellow. This car stuck out like a sexy thumb. Every single cop (whether on the shoulder giving a ticket or sitting parked on the side of the road) stopped what they were doing to watch me drive past. I could literally see their mouths watering.
  • Ride. Again, the rear of the car was quite bouncy and jittery; it gave me a headache at one point.
  • Rims. Dig the style of the wheels but absolutely hate that every other spoke is either black or polished aluminum.
  • No manual. Manual transmissions are fun. Comparing the Supra to the Mustang Bullitt, I think the Bullitt was more enjoyable to drive simply because you can row your own gears.
  • Buffeting. Lowering both windows creates terrible wind buffeting.
  • Trunk release. This is a simple but useful item, and the lack of an external release/pad [or kick release] seem like a mistake.
  • Road noise. Big rims and sporty tires make for a lot of road noise on anything other than perfect pavement.
  • Parcel shelf. The parcel shelf needs a redesign to be useful. The speakers should be moved to the outside edges of the cargo area.
  • No eco or comfort mode. You get normal and [configurable] sport. That’s it? It seems like a comfort and eco mode are needed in a near-$60K car.
  • Random button locations. The trunk release is not on the floor by the driver’s seat; instead, it’s located under the speaker. The trip reset button is also in an odd location. You’d think it would be located on the steering wheel or with the other auxiliary buttons. Nope, it’s in the corner of the gauges, and you have to put your hand through the spokes of the steering wheel to reach it.
