New Lego Creator Set Includes Two Classic Porsche 911s for the Price of One

Still holding out for the classic Porsche bubble to burst? We’re afraid you might be waiting for quite a while longer. While prices aren’t as stratospheric as they were a few years ago, it’s still tough to find a serviceable, driver-condition air-cooled 911 for under $30,000. This might be under the national average of prices paid for a new car, but it’s still a chunk to pay for an old garage toy.

On the subject of Porsches and toys, Lego just might have the perfect Band-Aid for that 911-sized hole in your driveway. Well, maybe not your driveway, but this new set is sure to zhuzh up your standing desk, at least. As part of Porsche’s ongoing partnership with the Danish toy company, its latest collab sees the brickification of the impact bumper Porsche 911 from the 1980s.

Though we’ve seen plenty of Porsche-themed Lego sets over the past few years, this is the first Porsche set to fall under the detail-oriented Creator Expert product line. For avid brick fans, this means a 911 joins the Volkswagen T1 Bus, Ferrari F40, Caterham Seven, Ford Mustang, Mini Cooper, Volkswagen Beetle, and the Aston Martin DB5 as part of the collector-oriented Creator lineup.

Each 1,458-piece set comes with components and directions to build either a 930-generation 911 Turbo or a classic Targa from the impact bumper era between 1974 and 1989. Unfortunately, it’s one or the other—you can’t build both from one set, so if you want to proudly display the Targa alongside the Turbo, prepare to pony up for two sets.

Both the Targa and the Turbo are fabulously detailed models, as far as Legos go. It’s an interactive set, as the doors swing open revealing a smart tan interior with a gauge cluster, shifter, emergency brake, and working steering. At the rear, the decklid props open to give a peek at the air-cooled flat-six engine rendered in plastic brick form, complete with air pump, intake, and the large central fan.

Go with the Targa, and the removable center roof portion stows under the frunk. Compared to the adjacent Turbo configuration, the Targa features a different wheel design, a fixed rear window, and that iconic blacked-out rollbar-hoop framing the passengers. The Turbo rides on a wider rear axle under that flat rear wing. Predictably, the Turbo build incorporates a turbocharger and intercooler in the engine bay, framed between swollen rear fender flares.

There are extra goodies for those who jump on this set early. As part of the free Lego VIP program, some of the first buyers will receive a limited edition bundle of extras with their new set, including a certificate of ownership, a Lego-Porsche card wallet, and a set of faux-advertisement posters featuring the new Lego 911 stylized like the original 1980s ads.

Yeah, we’re excited too. For members of Lego’s VIP program—it’s free to sign up on the Lego site—the new Lego Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa (10295) set is available for order on February 16. Non-VIP members must wait until March 1 to order theirs. Pricing starts at $149.99, so talk to your local Lego City Porsche dealer about financing and lease offers.
