The big news in the Subaru Crosstrek universe of late is the addition of a more powerful 2.5-liter engine option for the 2021 model year. That’s great for those who think the car’s standard 2.0-liter engine is a bit pokey. For better or worse, the Crosstrek Hybrid does not welcome as drastic a change for 2021. Maybe that’s a good thing because, at $36,395, the 2021 Crosstrek starts a mere $240 more than last year’s model. After all, this plucky little plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid is one of our favorites in its segment.
As before, the Crosstrek Hybrid still comes in a single trim level. There is an optional $2,500 equipment package that includes a power-operated moonroof, a heated steering wheel, an in-dash navigation system, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system with a 432-watt amplifier.
A mild refresh to the 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid adds a new fascia, which differentiates it subtly from its gas-only counterpart. The front end now sports a more wing-like set of bars flanking the grille badge and a prominent contrasting “blade” outboard of its foglights in the lower bumper. Frankly, it makes the regular 2021 Crosstrek’s front fascia and fender extensions look a little clumsy by comparison. What might make a bigger difference to drivers is the recalibrated springs and dampers—considering we weren’t fans of the old Crosstrek Hybrid’s suspension tuning, we hope the updates improve things noticeably.
As for everything else, expect much of the same, including—what is likely an optimistic—17 miles of claimed electric driving range and a conservative 35 mpg combined fuel economy rating. The 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid is also still eligible for a $4,502 federal tax credit and whatever state credits may apply. Look for the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid to hit dealer lots before winter comes to a close.
