The most anticipated gaming event is soon upon us! The launch of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) is expected in the Holiday Season 2020. The first view of the capabilities and features of the next generation of the iconic PlayStation’s latest entry were demonstrated to viewers during the “PS5 Event” on June 11th 2020. The viewers also got a glimpse of the upcoming next-generation games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7 among others. Rockstar Games, the developer behind Grand Theft Auto have revealed that they have no intentions of releasing the latest Grand Theft Auto (GTA VI) right away. However, they would instead update the GTA V for the PS5 just like they did for the PS4 from the PS3 making it one of the very few games to have lived across three different console generations as the flagship product of the franchise.
The next-gen gaming console
The PS5 comes in two variants. The PS5 standard edition, which has the ability to run and download games via a disc using the Internet and a PS5 digital edition that will only be able to download and run games with no disc drive. The PS5 digital edition will cost slightly less. The PlayStation 5 boasts of an 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz Central Processing Unit (CPU) alongside a Custom RDNA 2 (10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz) Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). It boasts of a memory and storage capacity of 16GB GDDR6/256-bit and 825GB respectively with an SSD Storage unit type. With 8K-screen resolution support and a frame rate of 120 frames per second, it is twice the rate of the standard PS4 with a sound output of 120Hz.
What makes it better?
The new DualSense controller is a complete revolution on the previous edition DualShock4. It has a two-tone colour design and a light bar placement that is integrated into sides on the touchpad rather than across the top as in the DualShock4. It grants the controller (according to Sony) “a slightly larger look and feel.” The new controller is rumoured to have a thicker form factor and the grips are updated. This upgrade allows for addition of new features such as the adaptive triggers.
The Adaptive Triggers integrated in L2&R2 are going to offer “resistance” depending on the intensity of pulling the trigger to give the gamers an ultimate feel of the tension in their in-game actions. One of the newest and by far the most innovative features is Haptic feedback, which brings in realistic reactions and response from the controller in accordance to what’s happening in the game (an update on the standard vibrations on previous generations). The PlayStation5’s Pre-Orders are open but the first round is an exclusive invite only event for which gamers need to register. The price is estimated to be in between the $350-$500 range. Sony has limited one console per one PSN ID, the pre order quantity limitations are as follows; 1 Console (Digital or Normal), 2 DualSense Controllers along with 2 charging stations, 2 Pulse 3D Wireless Headsets, 2 Media remotes and 2 HD Cameras.
The long-awaited console is almost upon us, the features it boasts along with a solid opening line-up of games makes it a frontrunner at the top of on Christmas Lists of casual and pro gamers alike.
