WHITBY, Ontario–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Personal support workers, nurses, housekeeping, dietary and other care staff at Marnwood and Strathaven long-term care homes, who beat the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and who often advocate on behalf of residents, are taking the rare step of advocating for themselves, their jobs and their working conditions.

The construction of a new home, Glen Hills Terrace by Durham Christian Homes, was a good news story for the community, residents and the several hundred long-term care staff employed by Durham Christian Homes. But the excitement of the new build (at Glen Hill Drive and Hwy#2) has quickly gone sideways, say the front-line staff, who are being offered inferior working conditions and wages to continue to work at the home.

On Thursday, July 16 at 11 a.m., Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 5110 and 2225-06/12 locals will hold a media conference to talk about why their employer’s refusal to honour their existing contract, outsource their jobs and bring-in two-tier wages will hurt both resident care and the staff who provide that care. They will be joined at the ZOOM media conference by area MPP Jennifer French as well as a family member of one of the residents who supports the workers’ efforts keep their jobs and working conditions.

“Our CUPE locals have a long history pulling through tough times. Many of us have been working at the two homes for decades. We want to continue to provide care for Glen Hills residents and families as Durham Christian Homes rebuilds. Unfortunately, the employer has other ideas. These ideas include making the jobs less stable and more underpaid. This is the exact opposite approach that we should be taking to make care better. It is not just about the bricks and mortar. It’s about the care. We are urging that both the physical building, and the care, be built right,” says Lisa Barkwell the president of CUPE 5110.
