RICHMOND, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce that Matthew R. McGuire has joined the firm as counsel in the issues and appeals practice in its Richmond office. McGuire most recently served as Principal Deputy Solicitor General and executive division counsel in the Virginia Attorney General’s office.
McGuire joins two other alumni of the Virginia Attorney General’s appellate team in the firm’s issues and appeals practice group: the former Solicitor General and former Acting Solicitor General. The team also includes former justices of the Supreme Courts of Virginia and Texas, West Virginia’s former Solicitor General, and more than 30 lawyers who have clerked for federal and state appellate judges, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
“Matt is a rising star with an already extensive and impressive track record in appellate and trial litigation, and we’re thrilled to have him onboard,” said Stuart A. Raphael, co-head of Hunton Andrews Kurth’s issues and appeals group and former Solicitor General of Virginia. “We look forward to seeing Matt continue the high-caliber work he demonstrated in the Virginia Attorney General’s office for the benefit of our clients.”
McGuire’s appellate experience includes several successes at the U.S. Supreme Court. He recently briefed, argued and won Currier v. Virginia, 138 S. Ct. 2144 (2018), involving an important question of double-jeopardy law. He was also the principal author of the cert petition in Mathena v. Malvo, granted recently by the Supreme Court to review a constitutional challenge to life-without-parole sentences received by Lee Boyd Malvo, one of the two perpetrators of the “D.C. sniper” attacks in 2002.
McGuire received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University and his law degree from George Mason University School of Law.
