Over a five-decade career, Thomas L. Ausley has established a reputation as one of the most distinguished family law attorneys in the state of Texas. To recognize his extraordinary career, the Texas Bar Foundation has presented him with the Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award.
“A man of great integrity, Tom’s embodiment of our core values of trust, client responsiveness, sound advice and ethical representation has earned him the respect of his peers and colleagues,” said Curtis W. Ausley adds the accolade to a long list of career accomplishments. During his notable career, he has served as Chair of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, as well as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and President of the Texas Chapter. He received the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists’ Sam Emison Award (2013), and the Austin Bar Association’s Distinguished Lawyer Award (2008) and Larry York Mentor Award (2016).
From a solo general civil practice to one of the state’s leading family law firms
Over his 50-year career, Ausley has gone from a young lawyer successfully representing general civil cases to co-founding what today is one of Texas’ premier family law firms GoransonBain Ausley, a firm of Dallas, Plano and Austin lawyers focused solely on family law.
An active and involved mentor to many in the firm today, Ausley says countless hours of wisdom and constructive criticism shared with him shaped him as a family lawyer. “Sharing with young attorneys mistakes I made in practice and in my personal life helps them understand perfection is not required. Integrity, diligence, and a strong desire to help others is what makes a successful family law attorney,” said Ausley.
Among his many accomplishments, being an attentive husband and involved father while building a successful law practice is his greatest singular achievement. He is also proud that his daughter Kelly Ausley-Flores, and granddaughter Jenae Flores have both chosen the career of a family law attorney. Kelly is a Partner and Jenae will be joining the firm as an Associate with GoransonBain Ausley in the firm’s Austin office.

The Bar Foundation commissioned an oral history to recognize and preserve the accomplishment of his legal career.
Ausley, and his wife, Robbie, have four children and ten grandchildren. He currently lives in Austin.
