AM Best Announces Retirement of Longtime Executive Larry G. Mayewski and Management Changes

OLDWICK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AM Best announced today that Larry G. Mayewski will retire from his position as chairman, president and CEO of A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc. at the end of the year. Matthew C. Mosher, currently executive vice president and chief operating officer, will succeed Mayewski and assume the role of president and CEO of A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc. on July 1, 2019.

Mayewski started at AM Best in 1981 as a financial analyst and quickly moved into positions of increasing responsibility. He joined AM Best’s Board of Directors in 1992, and in 2000, became executive vice president and chief rating officer, with oversight for the life/health, property/casualty and international rating divisions. Mayewski has testified before Congress and participated in many insurance industry seminars, addressing the financial health of the industry and AM Best’s Credit Rating process, and in 2005, led AM Best’s successful pursuit of its Nationally Recognized Statistical Rating Organization (NRSRO) designation. Mayewski moved into his current role with the establishment of the credit rating agency subsidiary in January 2016.

“On behalf of AM Best, we are grateful to Larry for his dedicated leadership for nearly four decades,” said Arthur Snyder III, chairman, president and CEO of A.M. Best Company, Inc. “During his tenure, the insurance industry has undergone enormous changes and Larry played a significant role in navigating AM Best through those market turns. We congratulate him on a well-deserved retirement.”

As part of the transition of responsibilities, Mayewski will assume the role of executive director at AM Best Rating Services, Inc., and remain as Chairman of the Board of AM Best Rating Services, Inc. for the remainder of the year.

Mosher held several management roles since joining AM Best in 1995 before assuming his current responsibilities as executive vice president and chief operating officer, as well as being the CEO of AM Best Asia-Pacific, Ltd. in Hong Kong and co-CEO of AM Best’s Singapore subsidiary. With his new role, Mosher also will be responsible for AM Best’s Europe-based subsidiaries in London and Amsterdam. Mosher is a graduate of Lehigh University, a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary.

“As we transition to the next chapter, I have great confidence in the strength of our team as AM Best meets head-on the current challenges of increased regulation of credit rating agencies while recognizing the need for innovation amid an evolving insurance market. Under Matt’s leadership, I believe the organization is well-positioned for continued success,” said Snyder.

Additionally, James Gillard will succeed Mosher as executive vice president and chief operating officer of A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc. Gillard has been with AM Best since 2008, and spent the past four years leading the enhancements of AM Best’s rating methodology and rating tools.
