DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The “Peru
– Fixed Broadband Market – Statistics and Analyses” report has
been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.
Broadband subscriber penetration in Peru is considerably lower than the
Latin American average, despite government efforts to encourage the
development of the sector. The shortcoming in broadband penetration is
partly due to barriers such as poverty, limited levels of literacy among
some demographics, low computer penetration, and rugged topography which
has made the extension of fixed-line infrastructure in some areas
difficult. Perhaps the biggest problem is the lack of market
competition, which has made broadband services in Peru among the slowest
and most expensive in the region.
Many of these difficulties are being addressed, and strong broadband
growth is anticipated in coming years. Much of this progress will feed
off the government’s national broadband plan, which aims to provide
internet connectivity via a fibre-optic backbone to the more remote
regions of Peru. A number of contracts have been signed since 2015 to
improve connectivity in a number of regions. Parts of the project
involving supplementary networks have suffered from implementation
delays, while networks being built by private operators have also
resulted in far less capacity demand than originally envisioned. This
prompted the Ministry of Communications in mid-2018 to review the
economic modelling of the project to encourage greater use of the
network.
In addition, the expanding LTE networks are providing mobile broadband
to an increasing number of rural communities, particularly following the
auction of additional spectrum in recent years.
