Coursera Opens Engineering Office in Toronto to Fuel Product Innovation

New Office Marks the Company’s First Engineering Operations Outside
of the US

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform, today announced
a new engineering office in Toronto, Ontario. The new office will be
staffed with engineers to accelerate innovation for the company’s
enterprise and partner products, and to support other business
initiatives over time.

In recent years, Toronto’s tech industry has seen rapid expansion,
resulting in its recent ranking
as the city with the highest growth
in tech-related jobs in Canada
and the U.S. This flourishing talent pool along with Toronto’s
world-class universities and research centers make the city an optimal
destination for Coursera as the company looks to expand its global reach
and product portfolio.

I’m thrilled that Coursera, a global leader in online learning, has
chosen to open a new office in Toronto,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory.
Toronto’s technology and innovation sector is growing at a rapid speed
that has started to attract international brands. I am confident that
our highly skilled, diverse workforce will continue to attract
innovative companies like Coursera to further grow our economy and
create new opportunities within the Toronto Region.”

Coursera will recruit from Toronto’s rich pool of high-quality
engineering talent to initially help drive innovation for its enterprise
platform, Coursera for Business, which currently enables more
than 1,800 companies to access the top-quality learning content they
need to help their employees gain the most in-demand skills. The team
will continue to broaden its engineering efforts to support other parts
of the business.

Rapid product innovation is fundamental to how we are creating new
possibilities for learners, educators, and employers in a rapidly
changing world — and we need the best engineering talent to do so,”
said Richard Wong, Vice President of Engineering at Coursera. “Toronto
is an emerging technology hub, and having a presence in the region
positions Coursera to continue our growth, innovate among a vibrant tech
community, and draw from an incredibly deep and impressive talent pool.”

Over the last several years, Coursera has been establishing roots in
Canada with strong partnerships with local
universities
and more than 75 enterprise customers in the region.
The company worked closely with Toronto Global, a team of experienced
business advisors that assist global businesses with expanding into the
Toronto Region, to understand the local market and ensure a smooth
transition.

Toronto Global was pleased to assist Coursera in the process of
selecting the Toronto Region for its new engineering office,” said Mark
Cohon, Chair of the Board of Directors for Toronto Global. “We are
thrilled that Coursera will call Toronto home, create jobs for our
talented workforce, and contribute to our reputation as a technology hub
and a global center for innovation.”

Since 2012, Coursera has grown to serve more than 40 million global
learners and 190 university and industry partners. In April, the company
secured $103 million in a Series E round of funding, which provided the
company with additional resources and flexibility to expand into new
regions and continue to strengthen and diversify its product offerings.
