Makers of SYLVANIA Light Bulbs and Be the Light Campaign Launch “Who Lights up Your World?” Contest

Nominate someone who spreads light for a chance for them to be
recognized.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario–(BUSINESS WIRE)–lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/BeTheLight?src=hash” target=”_blank”gt;#BeTheLightlt;/agt;–Every day, people make the world a brighter place for those around
them in small and large ways.
LEDVANCE,
the makers of SYLVANIA general lighting in Canada, and the non-profit
Be
the Light Campaign
are announcing the “Who Lights Up Your
World?” Contest to find, recognize and reward those who give off
positive energy, joy and light.
Starting today through July 31,
2019, you can nominate a person who lights up your world and exemplifies
what it means to “Be the Light” at
www.sylvania.com/BeTheLight.
Examples could include a friend, family member, co-worker, or anyone
you know who exudes positivity, is always willing to help when needed,
or is an inspirational role model.

“Be the Light is focused on the importance of hope. We believe that
mental health is just as important as physical health, and that small
moments of kindness can alter the course of someone’s day. These can
have a rippling effect that positively impacts more and more people over
time,” said Melissa Syler, founder of Be the Light Campaign. “Working
with the makers of SYLVANIA general lighting, we invite the nation to be
an agent of change. Be a part of something larger than yourself. Be the
Light.”

Out of the nominations, 25 people in Canada who best embody the “Be the
Light” concept will receive a Thank You Gift that includes a $50 Gift
Card and SYLVANIA LED lighting products. If your nominee is selected,
you will receive a $10 Gift Card and SYLVANIA lighting products too.
These selected stories of light-hearted people will be shared online
with the hope they will ignite a movement toward positivity and help
inspire others to Be the Light.

SYLVANIA LED light bulbs can last up to 22 years and save up to 85
percent on electricity. “SYLVANIA lighting products have been
illuminating homes and businesses for over a century, providing light
where you need it. It’s heartwarming to know that people across Canada
are also providing light when others need it through simple acts of
kindness,” said Wolfgang Mailaender, Head of Marketing for U.S. and
Canada, LEDVANCE.

Bringing Light to Others
Billboard Artist to
Watch Jessie
Chris
is a brand ambassador for the joint campaign between the
makers of SYLVANIA light bulbs and Be the Light Campaign. Growing up in
Massachusetts in the United States where being a country music fan
wasn’t popular in school, Jessie was constantly bullied by her peers.
She didn’t let that stop her from following her dreams of performing.
Now she is a recognized country music artist, performing at concerts,
walking red carpets and releasing music with other top musicians. “I
feel it’s important to me to Be the Light for others, like how my
parents were for me when I was going through dark times,” said Chris.
“This is why I have traveled to over 100 elementary and middle schools
to share my story of overcoming adversity to help students that are
dealing with being bullied. That’s also why I am so excited to be a part
of this initiative to recognize those that spread light.”

Calgary resident Mieka DiLouie, age 11, wrote her first novel at
the age of 10, which her father helped her self-publish. Since then, she
hosted a book signing at Owl’s
Nest Bookstore
and recently shared what she’d learned with young
writers from all over the city at the annual Calgary Young Writers
Conference. All profits were donated to Inn
from the Cold
, an organization that helps families in need. “The
best part of seeing my book published was inspiring other kids, just as
I was inspired, and knowing my hard work is helping people in need,”
DiLouie said. “Getting is good but giving is even better.”

Robert LaRonde is co-creator of Rewatchability,
a weekly Toronto-based movie and pop-culture podcast that revisits the
films of our youths to see what they have to offer today. Started
independently in 2011, Rewatchability became part of the
entertainmentOne Podcast Network in 2017 and has been featured on the
AVClub’s Podmass, CBC’s Podcast Playlist, Paste Magazine and the Hot
Docs Podcast Festival.

“When we started recording Rewatchability in our dining rooms, before
podcasting was really a big thing, it was a great way to regularly get
together as friends and have fun talking about our favorite movies from
childhood. We were optimistic that some people would find and enjoy our
silly little discussions, but we never predicted the profound and
meaningful ways our listeners would become part of our lives, and us
part of theirs,” said LaRonde.

“One example is how we received a request from someone asking us to
record a special episode they could gift their partner for Christmas to
thank them for being especially supportive and selfless during their
cancer diagnosis,” LaRonde continued. “It absolutely blew our minds that
somebody would consider what we do valuable enough to give as a gift,
especially one intended to show such deep appreciation. We felt so
honoured to be part of that couple’s holiday. Helping out even in such
small way reinforced to me what Rewatchability has always been about;
bringing people together through our mutual love and experience of
movies. Though the process of creating a show every week can be a lot of
hard work, the appreciation our listeners show us brings a lot of light
to my world, and I feel very privileged to be able to shine it back on
others.”

ABOUT BE THE LIGHT CAMPAIGN
Be the Light Campaign is a 501c3
non-profit organization that focuses on the importance of hope. From
simple, random acts of kindness towards the homeless, to hosting
community events, the mission of Be the Light Campaign is to spread hope
and compassion to all.

Be the Light Campaign was created from founder Melissa Syler’s personal
journey with depression and anxiety. Through this hardship she realized
the importance of having a strong support system. Be the Light Campaign
strives to be a positive support system for those in need. Since its
start in 2015, BTLC volunteers have written over 1,200 hand written
letters of encouragement; collected coats, blankets, personal items,
writing tablets and pens to fill over 300 bags for their “Hope for the
Homeless” events across the country; and placed Be The Light Campaign
stickers on five continents. They are continually adding programs to
spread light to more people.
