Non-Profit to Feature Six Students from Brooklyn’s Cristo Rey High School
Stand Up! Girls, a nonprofit organization that uses stand up comedy to empower young women from local, underserved communities, will host its second Comedy Performance Showcase at the landmark venue Comic Strip Live on February 10 at 3 PM featuring six girls from Cristo Rey High School in Brooklyn. The students will share the stage with renowned female comedians Chanel Ali, Areshia McFarlin, and Blair Hirak.
Stand Up! Girls strives to equip young women from underserved communities with the communication skills and confidence they need to lead and succeed in male-dominated workplaces and environments. By providing them with the opportunity to express themselves through comedy performance, Stand Up! Girls is empowering the next generation of young women with the skills they need to lead the boardrooms, court rooms and operating rooms of tomorrow. Through several months of classes at schools including Cristo Rey High School, girls who participate in Stand Up! Girls’ tuition-free programs learn how to improve their writing skills, find their own voices and gain self-awareness in a comfortable and encouraging space.
“We are very excited for our next showcase,” says Holly Weiss, Founder and President of Stand Up! Girls and a partner at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP, specializing in employment law. “Our students have worked extremely hard to get ready for this event and we can’t wait to show everyone what they’ve got. I am so inspired by their growth and development.”
