The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is offering some tips—five, to be precise—to improve and maximise the potential of communication during the holiday season when almost all people will be spending time with family and friends. Here are the tips, focusing more on parental communication with the children:
- In the Kitchen—All kids in while cooking. Kids could mess up cooking, but they will learn more in the process. They can build vocabulary, learn math concepts, talk, bond, and just have fun. Tackle a side dish together or a new cookie recipe for the holidays. Added bonus: It is very difficult to use a tablet (or do anything else!) when you are getting your hands dirty in the kitchen.
- On the Road (or in the Air)—Talk to your kids while you travel. Do not let these smart devices come in the way of an oldtime Do rely on technologies, but do not forget to talk to each other!
- Around the Dinner Table—These are the rare times when all members of families eat together. Talk freely and build better bonds!
- During Gift Wrapping or Card Writing—Think deep and hard about the gifts. The gifts should touch the heart of the receiver. Learn more about your kids’ recent interests and choose a gift accordingly. And, never forget to buy a holiday card and write a touching message.
- While Volunteering—If you have not done volunteering for a while, this is the best time. Take all your family along. This is will create a sort of bonding that no other activity can. There could be many other ways for improving the communication within the family during the holiday season. Whatever way you choose, enjoy the season and spread happiness.
