Suining in China reaps rewards of green development

The “2018 Green Economy Suining Conference” was conducted in Suining, in China, attracting about 300 renowned Chinese experts, scholars and entrepreneurs. Suining is perhaps the most appropriate location for a green summit.

In 2007, Suining was still a typical and traditional agricultural area in China. But from 2007, Suining has been following a different model of development, something that is based on green strategies. In the past 10 years or so, the region has become greener. Traditional industries have been replaced by electronic information, machinery and equipment, intelligent manufacturing, new materials, modern logistics and other emerging industries. The urban development stats are particularly indicative of the green trend. The urban area now boasts a per capita park and green space of 12.86 square metres, a completed greenery coverage rate of 41.35 per cent in and an incomplete grassland coverage rate of 37.47per cent. Guanyin Lake, a body of water in the middle of the city, has a surface area of 14.8 square kilometres, and Suining is also among the pioneers in China to commence “sponge city” construction. In the 2018 edition of the “State of China Cities” report, jointly published by UN Habitat and the Urban Planning Society of China, a photo of the city Suining adorned the front page with the theme “Green Urbanization in China.” This landscaped city has also garnered a variety of coveted accolades and sought-after titles such as “Green World City” and “International Park City”.
