Council for Citizens Against Government Waste Urges Congress to Approve USMCA

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#GovWaste–Today, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) President Tom Schatz sent a letter to the House of Representatives and the Senate, urging them to approve the United States, Mexico, Canada Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) which will set higher standards and better policy for trade.

The letter reads, in part:

“This trade agreement will modernize trade practices between the U.S., Canada and Mexico with higher standards and better policies that will help workers and businesses in the competitive twenty-first century economy. Farmers will be able to expand market access for American food and agricultural products and increase exports of dairy products. Auto workers will receive benefits from vehicle and automotive parts production in the U.S. and the promotion of higher wages in auto manufacturing.

Intellectual property protections are strengthened by the agreement, including a digital trade chapter that will prohibit customs duties and other discriminatory measures from being applied to digital products distributed electronically, allowing businesses to focus on innovation instead of overbearing data regulations. In addition, the agreement will encourage and promote cooperation among the three countries to increase small and medium-sized business trade and investment opportunities.

To ensure that the USMCA will remain viable as time evolves, the agreement must be reviewed and renewed by all participating countries every six years to adjust to economic and technological factors. While the provisions of this agreement are not perfect, USMCA is a vast improvement to the existing North American Free Trade Agreement and will encourage future economic growth and cooperation among the three countries.

Mexico has already approved the USMCA and Canada is moving forward to do so as well. I encourage you to approve the agreement as soon as Congress returns from the August recess.”
