Monitoring Service Introduced for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Pre-Employment Screening Program

Service notifies drivers about updates to their safety records

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–NIC Federal, LLC launched a monitoring service for the Federal Motor
Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Pre-Employment Screening Program
(PSP) that automatically notifies drivers when their PSP safety records
are updated. Drivers can sign up to receive emails every time
information is added to or removed from their records.

PSP provides instant online access to commercial drivers’ safety
histories, with the drivers’ written authorization, to assist motor
carriers with the hiring process. FMCSA contracts with NIC Federal, LLC
to develop and maintain PSP. FMCSA is responsible for the PSP data and
program leadership, while NIC Federal handles daily operations, customer
service, and technology development and maintenance.

PSP data is updated approximately every 30 days with a new data snapshot
from the FMCSA Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS)
database, which means a driver’s PSP records could change frequently.
The optional monitoring service automatically notifies drivers when
information changes on their individual PSP records, eliminating the
need for drivers to check their records constantly. Registered drivers
can easily subscribe for the monitoring service from their account
dashboards at www.psp.fmcsa.dot.gov.
After drivers receive an email from the monitoring service, they can log
in to their accounts to obtain their latest PSP records immediately.

“The PSP monitoring service simplifies the process for drivers to
understand the latest status of their PSP records,” said Laura Johnson,
NIC Federal General Manager. “Thousands of trucking companies use PSP
records to assess a driver’s safety performance when making hiring
decisions. It’s important for drivers to know what their prospective
employers see on their individual records.”

According to a study released by FMCSA, PSP positively impacts the
safety of America’s roadways. The study shows that motor carriers using
PSP have, on average, decreased crash rates by 8 percent, and driver
out-of-service (OOS) rates by 17 percent. It is estimated that in the 12
months studied, the motor carrier group using PSP prevented 863 crashes
and more than 3,500 driver OOS incidents. The results of the study can
be found at: http://www.psp.fmcsa.dot.gov/psp/Documents/PSP-Safety-Impact-analysis-brief.pdf.
